No more carbs!

So the world really must have wanted me to stop eating cake because the day after I wrote the last post, I shadowed in the obesity clinic and was introduced to the ketogenic diet – basically a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet.  I met a few patients who were successfully losing weight on this diet, so I decided that the heavens were telling me to stop eating cake..and brownies…and pies…and bagels…and bread…oh God.  What am I doing?! Do as I say, not as I do

In the middle of Kroger, I was grappled with the hardest decision I had to make today:

Should I buy cake or should I buy strawberries?

As someone who struggles to eat healthy, you can guess the decision I made.

cake

The ironic part is that I counseled two patients on healthy eating habits today, but it’s telling that even I, the physician who told them to eat better, can’t make the right decisions when faced with very. delicious. red velvet cake.

Intern year – learning one mistake at a time

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?” – Anne of Green Gables

My program had a “diastole” session today where the interns got together and talked about how everything’s been going.  The hour focused on medical errors and how to deal with them.  The timing of this topic couldn’t have been more perfect – over the last 2 weeks on wards, I felt like I made hundreds of mistakes.  One mistake in particular affected me so much that I cried for almost an hour after I realized what I had done and couldn’t sleep for the rest of the night.

You know you’re a gunner med student when…

…you are up at 4am reading Guyton Physio like it’s the last Harry Potter book, and you just don’t want to put it down because you want to know what happens next!!

Physio sucks sometimes because I feel like it never makes sense until you have all the information, but you don’t have all the information until 2 days before the test, and by then, it’s not enough time to piece everything together.

We’re doing renal physio right now, and it’s really sad how excited I am to be reading about counter current multiplication and counter current exchange.  It feels like getting to the end of a mystery novel, and you almost have all the clues to figure out who dun it.  SO CLOSE.  But you have to understand how ridiculous this is.  I read Guyton instead of watching the rest of my kdrama episode.  Granted, I’ve seen the drama before, so I know how it ends, but STILL.  It’s 4am.  And I’m reading Guyton.

Want to know how gunner I am?  This is next week’s material.

Burning Questions: When I stub my toe, why does it feel like I can’t breathe?

It’s 2:40am.  I just finished previewing tomorrow’s lectures (and having one too many nerd moments for it being 2 in the morning) when I decided I should probably do my social duty and brush my teeth so I don’t kill anyone with my horrendous oral odor.  As my clumsy self would do, I took a turn around my sink too quickly and stubbed my toe.

I have a low pain tolerance.

Every single time this happens, I hold my breath automatically.  Do you guys do that?  I wonder why.  Someone answer me!

How does the post office work?

How does acupuncture work?
